Château Cantemerle immediately lies south of the village of Macau in the midst of a thickly wooded park. The wine-growing history of Cantemerle reaches back to up to the ending 16th century. The name originates from the nobleman Chevalier Pons de Cantemerle who purchased a great estate in 1241. After several property changes it was bought for 1579 of Baron Jehan de Villeneuve and then stayed long more than three centuries into family property. In 1892, it worked into possession of the family Dubos who sold it to the large insurance S.M.A.B.T.P. in 1981. Large sums were invested now to take cellar technology to the newest state. In the field of Bordeaux classification in 1855 the property got the fifth rank (Cinquième Cru Classé). The 12-14-month development of the wine is carried out into to 50% new oak barrels.
